the other night we went out to dinner and came home with a couple take out containers....the kind with the clear lids. so the next day we decided to make shrinky dinks...because you can if the container is a #6 plastic. just look for this symbol.
it's a fun an inexpensive thing to do with the kiddies. and since i had all the supplies, it was time for some fun. wanna make some of your own?
you need:
• #6 plastic containers. (when you get them, flatten them and store them for rainy day fun)
• Permanent markers
• oven, preheat to 350ºf
• cookie sheet lined with foil (you don't want to get plastic toxins on it)
step one:
color your designs on the plastic with the permanent markers. you can use all parts of the plastic container....even the bumpy parts. it all flattens in the end. then cut them out. if you want to make jewelry, punch holes where you want to thread the string.
don't think for a minute that i can draw yoda that good.....i traced it out of a coloring book. see.
step two:
place your creations on the cookie sheet and put into the oven for 2-3 minutes. when you pull them out, if they are curled you have a few seconds to flatten them. but be careful, they are hot! don't put them in the oven for 20 minutes like i did (i was a little distracted with baby). because mine got shrunk a little too much. however....we still had fun and the kiddies though i was a cool mom!
happy shrinking!

p.s. if the plastic leaves an odor in you oven, run it at 400º for 10-20 minutes. i didn't get any lingering smells in my oven. just heard this from others.
