I am a Discovery Cube Ambassador! My goal is to share with you the latest happenings at the Discovery Cube and what to expect when you visit. Enjoy!
Discovery Science Cube's newest exhibit, Solar System Encounter is now open! This out-of-your-world exhibit, offers an exploration of the solar system in an exciting immersive way you and your kids will love. And it's better than ever!
The Solar System Encounter is back at Discovery Cube for a limited-time run. January 27 through March 3, 2024, get ready for an immersive journey into the solar system. Enjoy walking among large, colorful planets that you can explore and learn about. Glowing lights and calming music, make your journey into the atmosphere magical.
New to this year’s exhibit of the sun, moon and planets, is ultra-high-definition footage from the current journey of the James Webb Space Telescope on Discovery Cube's brand new plasma screens. The footage is truly mesmerizing.
Things to Do in the Solar System Encounter Exhibit
As mentioned above, the Solar System Encounter is an immersive exhibit, a must at any children's science center! You can explore the exhibit at your own pace, spending anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour learning about our solar system.
The activities and displays to help visitors learn about the solar system in a variety different ways. There are both hands-on activities and visually appealing imagery to enjoy.
How Much Do You Weigh on Other Planets?
First, as you walk into the Solar System Encounter, visitors can stop by the scale and find out how much you weigh on other planets! Fun for kids...and some adults (hahaha).
Learn About the Planets
The great thing about the Solar System Encounter exhibit is that it is a great calming environment to learn. Each planet, sun and moon on display has a learning kiosk. Kids love using the touch screen to read, answer questions, and see interesting diagrams about each one. This is fun for kids and adults alike.
Views from the James Webb Space Telescope
The James Webb Space Telescope is one of NASA's space telescopes designed to conduct infrared astronomy. It utilizes high-resolution and highly-sensitive instruments to allow it to view objects too old, distant, or faint for even the Hubble Space Telescope to detect. It is the first telescope of it's kind.
Discovery Cube has obtained imagery from the current journey of the James Webb Space Telescope. Footage such as the moon’s surface These images are projected on their new and amazing, high-definition video screens that were recently donated to Discovery Cube Orange County. It is truly BEAUTIFUL and captivating. Making the entire Solar System Encounter spectacular.
Create a Vehicle for Space Exploration
Kids can also use their LEGO building skills to create a vehicle for space exploration. Build rockets, spaceships, telescopes, or satellites with bins full of LEGO blocks. A great spot for any children who need a little break from the stimulation, or just to have fun.
Live Science Demonstrations and Experiments
Finally, enjoy live science demonstrations and experiments from one of Discovery Cube's very own educators. We got to learn from Miss Cindy!
The demonstrations are one of the highlights of the Solar System Encounters. We learned about gravity, light, gases, the science behind outer space. The kids especially loved getting up close to see the different experiments. And I enjoyed refreshing the knowledge I learned way back in school about these topics!
Is the Solar System Encounter Worth it?
Yes! We loved Discovery Cube's Solar System Encounter. Not only is it beautiful and photographable, it's calming and educational. Unlike any other experience in the OC, you can only find it at the CUBE. Plus, once you are done with the exhibit, Discovery Cube has many many more to explore!
How Do I Visit the Solar System Encounter
The Solar System Encounter is included in Discovery Cube's general admission ticket. You can purchase tickets at the door, or online. Discovery Cube also offers annual memberships so you can enjoy all of the science center including its temporary exhibits for an entire year at one low price.
